Behind the Scenes of a 6-Figure Funnel. Why unsubscribes, unconsumed freebies, and disappearing leads don't necessarily mean your funnel is broken.

“A Business Built to Please Everyone Will Eventually Never Please YOU.” - Lynn Louise
I recently participated in a friend’s birthday bundle for business owners. 💛 What a blast!
During the bundle, one of the contributors mentioned that she had women signing up for her free gift and then immediately unsubscribing from her email list.
And I thought… Yep. 😂
Welcome to lead generation.
There are people who LOVE free stuff.
They’ll sign up for the workbook, grab the template, download the guide and unsubscribe before you’ve even had a chance to properly introduce yourself.
Then there’s another group who will happily stay subscribed to your list but never actually consume the thing they downloaded.
I’ve done it.
You’ve probably done it.
There’s likely a PDF buried somewhere in your inbox right now that you were VERY excited about approximately six months ago. 😂
And yet, when it happens to us as business owners, we can make it mean something entirely different.
She unsubscribed.
She didn’t download it.
She didn’t finish it.
She didn’t open the follow-up email.
She didn’t click.
She didn’t buy.
And suddenly we’re questioning the freebie, the funnel, the messaging and sometimes our entire damn business. But that's not a broken funnel. What if nothing has gone wrong?
What if we’ve simply misunderstood the job of the lead generator? Because we call it a LEAD GENERATOR for a reason.
Do we hope people use it?
HELL YES! 🔥
Can it genuinely help or even transform someone?
HELL YES!
Should it contain real value?
F*CK YES!
But its primary job in your business is not to transform every person who registers for it.
➡️ Its job is to GENERATE LEADS.
It gets someone with a particular problem, desire, curiosity or interest to raise her hand and say: 🙋♀️ “This is something I care about.”
That’s it.
That’s the first movement.
Not the sale.
Not the transformation.
Not even necessarily the beginning of a deeply engaged relationship.
It is simply someone stepping forward and expressing interest. 🥳 And once you understand that you can start looking at your entire marketing system differently.
Your Funnel Isn’t Just Converting People. It's Manifesting Your Dream Clients.
We talk about funnels almost exclusively in terms of conversion.
How many people opted in?
How many opened?
How many clicked?
How many booked?
How many bought?
Obviously, those numbers matter. But there’s another function happening inside a good funnel that we don’t talk about nearly enough.
🔥 It’s filtering.
Someone sees your content and keeps scrolling?
Filtered.
Someone sees your lead generator and thinks, “That’s exactly what I need.” She opts in.
Someone else signs up because FREE sounded good, downloads it and disappears forever. Filtered.
Another woman downloads it, consumes the entire thing and starts reading your emails. She moves forward!
Another stays on your list for six months, occasionally opening an email but never engaging.
Then one morning you write something that hits exactly where she is in her life. Suddenly she’s paying attention. 🎯
She clicks.
She reads about your offer.
She books the call.
She buys.
The funnel didn’t fail during those six months. She simply wasn’t ready to move to the next level of commitment yet.
This is why I think we need to stop imagining marketing as a giant net designed to capture people and keep them inside.
A healthy marketing system is a pathway.
People should be able to move forward.
And they should be able to move OUT.
Because your goal isn’t to keep everybody.
Your goal is to make it easier for the right people to identify themselves.
Every Step Forward Requires More Commitment From You and Your Aligned Clients
Think about what you’re actually asking someone to do as she moves through your world.
Reading a Facebook post requires almost nothing. She was already scrolling. Your post happened to appear.
Clicking over to your website requires a little more.
Giving you her email address requires another small level of commitment.
Opening the resource requires more.
Actually consuming it requires more.
Reading your emails week after week requires more.
Clicking through to an offer requires more.
Booking a call, pulling out a credit card or signing a contract requires significantly more.
The number of people moving forward SHOULD get smaller. Because the level of commitment is getting bigger.
This is where I think entrepreneurs can accidentally create a tremendous amount of unnecessary work for themselves.
We see the shrinking numbers and immediately think: How do I get MORE people to keep going?
Sometimes that’s absolutely the right question.
If 1,000 highly qualified women opt into something and virtually nobody takes the next logical step, I want to know why.
There may be a messaging problem.
There may be a disconnect between the lead generator and the offer.
There may be no obvious next step.
Maybe you’re attracting people who want the free solution but have very little interest in the deeper problem you solve.
That’s useful information.
But declining numbers themselves aren’t evidence of failure. They’re part of the system.
The better question is: Are the RIGHT people continuing to move forward?
That’s a completely different way of looking at your marketing.
Stop Asking One Freebie to Run Your Entire Business. It Isn't the Funnel That is Broken.
Here’s another mistake I see.
We create a lead generator and quietly expect it to do about fourteen jobs. 😂
It needs to attract leads.
Prove our expertise.
Create trust.
Build connection.
Get consumed.
Deliver a transformation.
Warm someone up.
Sell the offer.
And ideally make the woman think, “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE? TAKE MY MONEY.”
All before breakfast.
That’s an enormous amount of pressure to put on one PDF. 😂
Your lead generator is one piece of an ecosystem.
Its job is to create the first opening.
Then your nurture gets to do its job.
💛 Your emails get to do theirs.
💛 Your content continues the conversation.
💛 Your perspective allows people to understand how you think.
💛 Your offers show them what’s possible.
💛 Your sales process helps the right person decide whether she wants to go further.
No single piece has to do everything. And when every part of the business has a clear purpose, something really important happens:
YOU don’t have to compensate for the system.
🚫 You don’t have to keep creating more.
🚫 You don’t have to constantly convince.
🚫 You don’t have to chase every lead.
🚫 You don’t have to panic every time someone unsubscribes.
The structure starts doing some of the work for you. And THAT is where this conversation becomes about something much bigger than lead generation.
It becomes a conversation about freedom.
The Hidden Cost of Trying to Keep Everyone.
I want you to think about how much entrepreneurial labor is created by the belief that everyone needs to stay.
We add another email.
Create another bonus.
Build another funnel.
Rewrite the freebie.
Add another module.
Make another post.
Change the headline.
Create another lead generator because apparently the first seven weren’t enough.
Sometimes those changes are strategic. But a lot of the time we’re simply responding emotionally to normal filtration.
Someone left.
So, we do MORE.
Someone didn’t buy.
We add MORE.
Engagement dropped.
We create MORE.
And without realizing it, we’ve built a business that requires an enormous amount of labor because we’re constantly trying to prevent people from opting themselves out.
What if you trusted your business enough to let the wrong people leave?
Someone grabs your freebie and immediately unsubscribes? Let her go. 💛 She just qualified herself OUT.
Someone follows you for three months and decides your philosophy isn’t for her? 💛 Beautiful.
Someone reads your sales page and thinks, “Nope”? 💛 Also useful.
Because every NO gives you more clarity around the YES you’re actually building the business for.
This doesn’t mean we ignore data or assume your funnel is broken.
➡️➡️➡️ Quite the opposite.
It means we stop emotionally reacting to individual behavior and start looking for meaningful patterns.
There’s a massive difference between:
“One woman unsubscribed after downloading my freebie.”
And:
“People are opting in at a healthy rate, but almost nobody is moving from my lead generator into the next stage of my ecosystem.”
The first is an anecdote.
The second is business intelligence.
That distinction matters.
Measure the Path, Not Just the Crowd
This is where I want you to look more closely at your own business.
Instead of asking: How many people downloaded my freebie?
Start asking: Who did it attract?
1️⃣ Did the topic attract the kind of person you ultimately want to work with?
2️⃣ What did she tell you about herself by opting in?
3️⃣ What problem was she trying to solve?
4️⃣ What desire made her stop scrolling and give you her email address?
5️⃣ And most importantly: Where does she go next?
Because a lead generator without a pathway is just a free resource.
There should be a natural relationship between the thing she raised her hand for and what you eventually sell.
Not necessarily an immediate pitch.
A pathway.
Your free resource helps her recognize, understand or solve something.
That creates a new level of awareness.
That awareness naturally reveals another problem, opportunity or desire.
Your content and nurture help her explore it.
Your paid work offers a deeper way forward.
That’s a business ecosystem.
And when it’s working well, you don’t need to force people through it. The structure helps people self-select.
This Is What Structured Freedom Actually Looks Like
Freedom in business isn’t created simply by working fewer hours. It’s created by removing unnecessary labor.
It’s created when you understand what each piece of your business is designed to accomplish and stop demanding that every piece do everything.
Your lead generator generates interest.
Your nurture builds relationship.
Your content deepens perspective.
Your offers create opportunities.
Your sales process creates decisions.
Your systems support delivery.
And YOU get to stop standing in the middle of all of it manually pushing people from one step to another.
That’s structured freedom.
It’s not passive.
It’s not effortless.
And it’s definitely not doing nothing.
It’s intentionally building a business where the right work happens in the right places.
So, here’s what I want you to look at this week:
Where are you doing work your business structure should be doing for you?
And specifically, when it comes to your lead generation:
Is your free resource attracting the people you actually want?
Does it solve ONE clear problem?
Does the person who opts in naturally fit the audience for your paid work?
Is there an obvious pathway for her to continue the relationship?
And are you spending unnecessary time and energy worrying about the people who were never going to move forward anyway?
Because you don’t need everyone.
You need the right people.
You need a clear pathway.
And you need a structure that allows people to show you whether they want to keep walking it.
Sometimes they will.
Sometimes they’ll hang around for six months before taking another step.
Sometimes they’ll walk through the front door, grab the freebie and immediately turn around and leave. 😂
Let them.
Your job isn’t to stand at the door convincing everyone to stay. Your job is to make sure the people who DO want what you’re creating know exactly where to go next.
🥂 And sometimes an unsubscribe is just as useful as an opt-in.
If reading this made you realize just how much work you’ve been doing that your business could be structured to do differently, I created something for you.
